Measuring V_ub and probing SUSY with double ratios of purely leptonic decays of B and D mesons
The experimental prospects for precise measurements of the leptonic decays
B_u -> tau nu / mu nu, B_s -> mu+ mu-, D -> mu nu and D_s -> mu nu / tau nu are
very promising. Double ratios involving four of these decays can be defined in
which the dependence on the values of the decay constants is essentially
eliminated, thus enabling complementary measurements of the CKM matrix element
V_ub with a small theoretical error. We quantify the experimental error in a
possible future measurement of |V_ub| using this approach, and show that it is
competitive with the anticipated precision from the conventional approaches.
Moreover, it is shown that such double ratios can be more effective than the
individual leptonic decays as a probe of the parameter space of supersymmetric
models. We emphasize that the double ratios have the advantage of using |V_ub|
as an input parameter (for which there is experimental information), while the
individual decays have an uncertainty from the decay constants (e.g. f_B_s),
and hence a reliance on theoretical techniques such as lattice QCD.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure
Study of the Baryon-Antibaryon Low-Mass Enhancements in Charmless Three-body Baryonic B Decays
The angular distributions of the baryon-antibaryon low-mass enhancements seen
in the charmless three-body baryonic B decays B+ -> p pbar K+, B0 -> p pbar Ks,
and B0 -> p Lambdabar pi- are reported. A quark fragmentation interpretation is
supported, while the gluonic resonance picture is disfavored. Searches for the
Theta+ and Theta++ pentaquarks in the relevant decay modes and possible
glueball states G with 2.2 GeV/c2 < M-ppbar < 2.4 GeV/c2 in the ppbar systems
give null results. We set upper limits on the products of branching fractions,
B(B0 -> Theta+ p)\times B(Theta+ -> p Ks) Theta++
pbar) \times B(Theta++ -> p K+) G K+) \times
B(G -> p pbar) < 4.1 \times 10^{-7} at the 90% confidence level. The analysis
is based on a 140 fb^{-1} data sample recorded on the Upsilon(4S) resonance
with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure files, update of hep-ex/0409010 for journal

Goldstone Bosons in Effective Theories with Spontaneously Broken Flavour Symmetry
The Flavour Symmetry of the Standard Model (SM) gauge sector is broken by the
fermion Yukawa couplings. Promoting the Yukawa matrices to scalar spurion
fields, one can break the flavour symmetry spontaneously by giving appropriate
vacuum expectation values (VEVs) to the spurion fields, and one encounters
Goldstone modes for every broken flavour symmetry generator. In this paper, we
point out various aspects related to the possible dynamical interpretation of
the Goldstone bosons: (i) In an effective-theory framework with local flavour
symmetry, the Goldstone fields represent the longitudinal modes for massive
gauge bosons. The spectrum of the latter follows the sequence of
flavour-symmetry breaking related to the hierarchies in Yukawa couplings and
flavour mixing angles. (ii) Gauge anomalies can be consistently treated by
adding higher-dimensional operators. (iii) Leaving the U(1) factors of the
flavour symmetry group as global symmetries, the respective Goldstone modes
behave as axions which can be used to resolve the strong CP problem by a
modified Peccei-Quinn mechanism. (iv) The dynamical picture of flavour symmetry
breaking implies new sources of flavour-changing neutral currents, which arise
from integrating out heavy scalar spurion fields and heavy gauge bosons. The
coefficients of the effective operators follow the minimal-flavour violation
principle.Comment: 27 pages, abstract and introduction extended, more detailed

Study of B -> \rho \pi decays at Belle
This paper describes a study of B meson decays to the pseudoscalar-vector
final state \rho\pi using 31.9\times 10^6 B\bar{B} events collected with the
Belle detector at KEKB. The branching fractions B(B^+ \to \rho^0\pi^+) =
(8.0^{+2.3+0.7}_{-2.0-0.7}) \times 10^{-6} and B(B^0 -> \rho^{+-} \pi^{-+}) =
(20.8^{+6.0+2.8}_{-6.3-3.1}) \times 10^{-6} are obtained. In addition, a 90%
confidence level upper limit of B(B^0 \to \rho^0\pi^0) < 5.3 \times 10^{-6}is
reported.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Lett.
An improved observable for the forward-backward asymmetry in B -> K* l+ l- and Bs -> phi l+ l-
We study the decay B -> K* l+ l- in the QCD factorization approach and
propose a new integrated observable whose dependence on the form factors is
almost negligible, consequently the non--perturbative error is significantly
reduced and indeed its overall theoretical error is dominated by perturbative
scale uncertainties. The new observable we propose is the ratio between the
integrated forward--backward asymmetry in the [4,6] GeV^2 and [1,4] GeV^2
dilepton invariant mass bins. This new observable is particularly interesting
because, when compared to the location of the zero of the FBA spectrum, it is
experimentally easier to measure and its theoretical uncertainties are almost
as small; moreover it displays a very strong dependence on the phase of the
Wilson coefficient C_10 that is otherwise only accessible through complicated
CP violating asymmetries. We illustrate the new physics sensitivity of this
observable within the context of few extensions of the Standard Model, namely
the SM with four generations, an MSSM with non--vanishing source of flavor
changing neutral currents in the down squark sector and a Z' model with tree
level flavor changing couplings.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure
Model-independent constraints on new physics in b --> s transitions
We provide a comprehensive model-independent analysis of rare decays
involving the b --> s transition to put constraints on dimension-six Delta(F)=1
effective operators. The constraints are derived from all the available
up-to-date experimental data from the B-factories, CDF and LHCb. The
implications and future prospects for observables in b --> s l+l- and b --> s
nu nu transitions in view of improved measurements are also investigated. The
present work updates and generalises previous studies providing, at the same
time, a useful tool to test the flavour structure of any theory beyond the SM.Comment: 1+39 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. v2: minor modifications, typos

New Physics in b -> s mu+ mu-: CP-Conserving Observables
We perform a comprehensive study of the impact of new-physics operators with
different Lorentz structures on decays involving the b -> s mu+ mu- transition.
We examine the effects of new vector-axial vector (VA), scalar-pseudoscalar
(SP) and tensor (T) interactions on the differential branching ratios and
forward-backward asymmetries (A_{FB}'s) of Bsbar -> mu+ mu-, Bdbar -> Xs mu+
mu-, Bsbar -> mu+ mu- gamma, Bdbar -> Kbar mu+ mu-, and Bdbar -> K* mu+ mu-,
taking the new-physics couplings to be real. In Bdbar -> K* mu+ mu-, we further
explore the polarization fraction f_L, the angular asymmetry A_T^{(2)}, and the
longitudinal-transverse asymmetry A_{LT}. We identify the Lorentz structures
that would significantly impact these observables, providing analytical
arguments in terms of the contributions from the individual operators and their
interference terms. In particular, we show that while the new VA operators can
significantly enhance most of the asymmetries beyond the Standard Model
predictions, the SP and T operators can do this only for A_{FB} in Bdbar ->
Kbar mu+ mu-.Comment: 54 pages, JHEP format, 45 figures (included). 5/6/2013: typos in K*

Measurement of the Relative Branching Fraction of to Charged and Neutral B-Meson Pairs
We analyze 9.7 x 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded with the CLEO detector to
determine the production ratio of charged to neutral B-meson pairs produced at
the Y(4S) resonance. We measure the rates for B^0 -> J/psi K^{(*)0} and B^+ ->
J/psi K^{(*)+} decays and use the world-average B-meson lifetime ratio to
extract the relative widths f+-/f00 = Gamma(Y(4S) -> B+B-)/Gamma(Y(4S) ->
B0\bar{B0}) = = 1.04 +/- 0.07(stat) +/- 0.04(syst). With the assumption that
f+- + f00 = 1, we obtain f00 = 0.49 +/- 0.02(stat) +/- 0.01(syst) and f+- =
0.51 +/- 0.02(stat) +/- 0.01(syst). This production ratio and its uncertainty
apply to all exclusive B-meson branching fractions measured at the Y(4S)
resonance.Comment: 11 pages postscript, also available through

First Observation of the Decays and B^{0}\to D^{*-}p\bar{n}$
We report the first observation of exclusive decays of the type B to D^* N
anti-N X, where N is a nucleon. Using a sample of 9.7 times 10^{6} B-Bbar pairs
collected with the CLEO detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage
Ring, we measure the branching fractions B(B^0 \to D^{*-} proton antiproton
\pi^+) = ({6.5}^{+1.3}_{-1.2} +- 1.0) \times 10^{-4} and B(B^0 \to D^{*-}
proton antineutron) = ({14.5}^{+3.4}_{-3.0} +- 2.7) times 10^{-4}. Antineutrons
are identified by their annihilation in the CsI electromagnetic calorimeter.Comment: 9 pages postscript, also available through

Study of the Decays B0 --> D(*)+D(*)-
The decays B0 --> D*+D*-, B0 --> D*+D- and B0 --> D+D- are studied in 9.7
million Y(4S) --> BBbar decays accumulated with the CLEO detector. We determine
Br(B0 --> D*+D*-) = (9.9+4.2-3.3+-1.2)e-4 and limit Br(B0 --> D*+D-) < 6.3e-4
and Br(B0 --> D+D-) < 9.4e-4 at 90% confidence level (CL). We also perform the
first angular analysis of the B0 --> D*+D*- decay and determine that the
CP-even fraction of the final state is greater than 0.11 at 90% CL. Future
measurements of the time dependence of these decays may be useful for the
investigation of CP violation in neutral B meson decays.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
